Ladies Cricket

Our ladies had their first ever game in the Surrey Trust league and narrowly lost to Caterham Cricket Club. They are hoping for a better result at the next festival in Guildford on 30th May.

Last weekends results:

Saturday

The 1’s lost a local derby to Alleyn & Honor Oak. With the return of 4 players, SMCC were confident of beating their local rivals who were suffering from the loss of former England Under 19, Chris Thompson. The day couldn’t have started worse as we loss the toss, Danny Davenport struggled with the run up and McGill pulled up lame on a poor outfield. SMCC bowled well initially, but the 5th & 6th bowlers struggled to restrict the scoring. AHO ended on 257-6. After the loss of both openers, Benge and Thomas rebuilt till SMCC lost the latter at drinks. The middle order was ripped out and 105-2 had become 112-6. Benge continued on and made a good 69, but SMCC fell 61 runs short. (D Ellis)

2nd X1 League position – 8th / 10

 ————————————————————-

Following last week’s frustrating loss, the 3s were keen to make amends against Oxted and Limpsfield. A good start saw the home side going at just 4s at the drinks break. Whiteman and Ball bowled with discipline and Toney’s fitness levels (17 overs, 14 of them on the bounce) were commendable. However, a strong 4 wicket partnership, some expensive bowling from Hardy, Sowton and Lawrence and some poor ground fielding contrived to put them in a commanding position. A total of 273 looked commanding, but certainly gettable. The first over of our response, however, and it looked anything but. After a positively England mid-1990s start (1 for 2), Shah and Slaughter began to rebuild. Shah in particular, despite only having had two hours sleep following an all-night poker session, played some glorious shots. His pretty 32 ended with a frustrating lazy waft. Sowton, having called Slaughter through for a too-tight run, was keen to stay out in the middle as long as possible and counterattacked aggressively. Thompson joined in, and the match started to turn in S&M’s favour. When Thompson edged a half-tracker though, not even Ball’s brutality at the other end could drag us over the winning line. All in all, good in places but consistency is key if we are to chalk our first points up. (C Sowton)

3rd X1 League position – 13th equal / 18

 ————————————————————-

In the final friendly of the season the 4s came up against a strong North Middlesex side, once they had found their way south of the water to where ‘there be dragons’, apparently. Batting first, S&M put on 159 in 40 overs. Highlights were solid runs from Simon Staurt, (nickname not inserted due to defamation litigation), Vidal and Hubert, with some impressive late hitting from Champers Stuart and Saga ‘George’ Mehta, the latter especially pleased with a flat bat six having advanced down the strip to the opening bowler. The opposition got off to a quick start with perhaps a little too much carbo-loading at tea limiting the attacking sensibilites of some in the fielding unit, but the run rate was dragged back by Henderson and Shiraz ‘Landings’ Sheik. Leg spin tweakerey and nagging accuracy from Champers and George kept the pressure on until a late flurry of runs from a batsman who should have gone out and bought a lottery ticket ended the match with 6 overs remaining. Having had 3 tough friendlies against very good opposition, the 4s are well placed to start the promotion challenge at home against our good friends AOB next week. (D Gladstone)

4th X1 League Position – N/A

————————————————————-

A blustery and overcast afternoon in front of a large crowd (mostly tourists en route to the Meridian and local thugs ) saw the V’s crash to their third straight defeat of the season. Batting first on an interesting track we made 148-9 off our 46 overs with J. Sbresni (19), K. Morgan (15), T. Ash (24) R. Bell (23) the main contributors. The 14 year old Left Arm spinner J. Miah took 3 for 156 off his 12 overs and looked a fine young bowler. We thought this was a competitive total but a combination of some below par bowling, 4 dropped catches and skilful batting saw our total overhauled within 31 overs for the loss of only 2 wickets. Both openers made 50’s and only Rory Thomas troubled the wickets tally with 2 for 35 off 8 overs. Good to see that heads did not go down and that team morale remains buoyant. Always a pleasure to play Blackheath – a fine bunch of gentlemen and Belair Park to look forward to next week.
